How to Ride

Information

If you do not have a bus schedule or route map, give us a call at (740) 592-2727 and we’ll help you plan your trip.  Be sure to have a pencil and paper handy to write down notes.  If you need a bus schedule just ask, they're free.  Bus information lines are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Have Pass Or Exact Fare Ready

Be sure to have your pass or exact change ready.   Drivers do not make change.  If you request a reduced fare or plan to use a reduced fare pass, you will be asked to show proof of eligibility by the driver.  Please have that documentation with you whenever you ride the bus.

Go to Bus Stop

Athens Transit is a hail system.  This means all you have to do is signal the bus and it will pull over at the next nearest and safe location.  You may also look for the Athens Transit bus stop signs at designated stopping locations.  Plan to arrive a few minutes early to the bus stop.  When the bus comes toward you, signal the driver by raising your hand and the bus will stop for you.  Remember the bus will stop at the nearest safe location.

Pre-Schedule a Route Deviation

Buses will deviate up to a quarter of a mile beginning from and returning to the same point of the schedule route.  Pre-scheduling a route deviation should be done 24 hours in advance by calling (740) 592-2727.

Route deviations can only be scheduled in conjunction with the system’s published timetables.  Last minute pick up deviations cannot be guaranteed.  Customers requesting pre-schedule route deviations must be present when the bus arrives.

Customers needing a route deviation for a drop-off need only inform the driver upon entering the bus.

Please be Seated

Please find a seat quickly.  Bus courtesy is to leave the front seats vacant for senior citizens or people with disabilities who may board after you.

Customers are permitted to bring onboard and use child car seats but are fully responsible for their use.  Customers may use seat belts where provided.

Signal Your Stop

When you get within one to two blocks of your destination, let the driver know you want to get off the bus.  Gather your belongings and wait for the bus to stop.  Once you exit, quickly move away from the bus.

Compliments?  Complaints?  Call!

To help us improve service, customer comments are important.  To make a comment, outline a misunderstanding or compliment an employee, please contact the Athens Mayor’s Office at (740) 592-3338.  Please note the bus route, bus number, time of day and location involved in the matter.
